CHAPTER 15
WHEN I WENT DOWNSTAIRS, everyone was ready to go. Jack and Bear were studying a piece of paper that looked as though it had been folded one too many times.
They were mumbling about directions while Kara and Kellan were making sure everything was packed up. Lily was moving around from window to window as though she was checking to make sure all the monsters were gone.
The light coming in through the windows was rather bright, so I assumed the monsters were probably long gone, but where did they hide during the day if they didn’t have a building to go inside of? Would they just stand there lurking in the shadows if they couldn’t find a hiding place in time? Could they even be outside while the sun was up if they were in the shade? I knew they were hiding somewhere, I just didn’t know where.
“Anything?” Jack said barely glancing up to acknowledge Lily.
“None that I see,” she said with a sweet smile. “Ready when you are.”
“We just have to wait for—“
“Good morning,” I said with a small wave. “You could have woke me.”
Jack shook his head, but the others seemed slightly annoyed. “It’s fine. Let’s get moving. Got your things?”
I lifted my backpack at the same time Lily handed me some kind of breakfast bar. She smiled as she picked up her pack and walked over to the front door next to Kellan and Kara.
Kellan looked over his shoulder, and when he saw us all standing there waiting, he opened the door. He lifted his gun and turned from side to side quickly.
Even though it was unlikely any monsters were hanging around, they didn’t want to take any chances. When we got out to the front lawn, I turned around, but Jack wasn’t with us anymore. The second I heard the grinding noises of the garage door being opened, I remembered he had put the van away for the night.
“How far do you think it’ll be today?” Kara asked glancing at Bear.
“Not sure,” he grunted looking down at me. The look in his eyes was strange. It made me feel as though I was intruding on the conversation. “What if there is no camp?”
Bear cocked his head to the side and looked at me. It seemed as though one second I annoyed him and in the next, he wanted my opinion.
“Are you asking me?” I said as Jack backed the van out of the garage. He hopped back out of the van and closed the garaged door. It seemed strange he’d even bother, but I guess Jack didn’t want to give the monsters a place to hide out.
“Yes,” Bear said with a blank expression.
“Well, Jack sure seems to think so, but I have no idea. I guess there could be,” I said with a shrug.
“Before you met us, how many survivors had you seen?” Bear asked. I could feel all of their eyes on me. Jack was driving closer to us in reverse.
I swallowed hard and looked up into Bear’s eyes.
